This Tokina 12-24 lens is possibly the best third party manufacturer’s wide angle lens I have ever tested and used to date.
The main deciding factor for me was the price, since I don’t have an unlimited budget for equipment. I have spent so much on buying expensive lenses over the years and do not plan on spending more on it.
When I was searching for an affordable wide angle lens I found this lens and thought I would give it a shot. Thankfully, this lens turns out to be a good performer and did not disappoint during both field and lab testing.
For the cost I feel like I have found a huge amount of features. The available apertures are ideal for the type of work I do. I am also able to use a polarizing filter, which isn’t possible with other lenses in the same category that I have looked at.
This lens also has 15 Group and 19 Elements, which makes me, think like a lot of care has been put into the design of this lens. So far, this is the only lens in the DSLR market that has such complex optical design.
I am mainly a portrait and landscape photographer, so I really appreciate not only the clarity, but the lack of distortion in this lens compared to other third-party lenses I have used.
What really struck me was how solidly the Tokina 12-24mm lens is built. It can easily be compared to any Nikon or Canon lenses which cost twice or more. The one that I am referring to is the Nikon 12-24mm, Nikon 10-24mm and Canon 10-22mm.
When toying around with it, I didn’t feel any wobble, and I feel confident when I put it in my bag that I have a piece of equipment that I can count on.
The finish on the outside of the casing really adds to that, it has a quality texture that makes it feel like a much more expensive lens. I would feel secure taking this lens to extreme photography environment such as humid Tropical Island or the freezing north island.
I didn’t experience any noticeable difference in glass quality in the Tokina 12-24 lens compared to other name brand lenses such as Canon or Nikon. As far as I’m concerned if you are looking for a third party lens to save cost, then I would recommend this lens.
